TOEFL® the structure of the iBT Test
 
Reading

  • 3-5 passages

  • 12-14 comprehension questions about each passage

  • 2-3 separately timed parts

- you can go next, or back to see the questions. It is better to answer the questions in order. However, you can choose to skip.

Basic reading question types

  1. Multiple choice with one correct answer (four answer choices)

  2. Insert a sentence – a sentence and four places marked in the text.

  3. Summary – six answer choices, select three of them and drag them next to the bullets (more than 1 point)

  4. Category chart – 5-7 answer choices (more than 1 point)

Listening

  • each listening passage is followed by 5 or 6 questions

  • each listening passage begins with a spoken statement that sets the context

  • taking notes is permitted and recommended

Basic listening question types

  1. 1. Multiple choice with one correct answer

  3. 3. Chart – requires to complete the chart

Speaking

1. Independent task

  • personal preference task – state and support a personal choice from a particular category (hobby, events, important people, places

  • personal choice task – asks you to make and support a choice between two contrasting behaviours or actions

- For each you will have 15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to speak.

2. Integrated task

  • reading/listening/speaking tasks – a campus situation topic and an academic topic. You will have 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak

- You will be asked to combine important information from the two sources

  • listening/speaking tasks - a campus situation and an academic course. You will be asked to summarize and explain. You will have 20 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to speak

Writing

1. Independent task

  • 30 minutes to compose an essay of at least 300 words in response to an assigned question

2. Integrated task

  • you will have 3 minutes to read a passage of 230-300 words. The reading passage is then hidden while you listen to a two-minute excerpt form a lecture that is related to reading. You may take notes during both. Then you have 20 minutes to write a 150-to 225-word response to a question. The reading passage reappears during this time so that you may refer to it while you are writing.
